When American Daughters learn with and celebrate each other, we are empowered to claim our futures.
American Daughters is working to create the American Daughters Academy, an annual 4-week summer program, for high school-aged women that allows them to explore an area of interest through mentorship; visit Kansas City neighborhoods and landmarks, including institutes of art, food, culture, and education; learn from and with women entrepreneurs and leaders; and work together to explore social and community issues. By introducing participants to a community of supportive women and resources through the Academy, young women will leave the Academy feeling empowered and confident to step outside the familiar, pursue their goals, and claim their futures.
Each Academy student will be matched with a mentor that has experience in the student's area of interest. Mentors will commit 3 days per week to provide job-shadowing experiences and guidance with their student's project.
Shared experiences will facilitate opportunities for Academy students to learn about each other, American Daughters, and the different communities of people that make up the Kansas City area. Students will be expected to think critically and reflect together on a variety of topics, issues, and activities taking place in Kansas City and beyond. Activities may include a book study, learning from guest speakers, and taking field trips.
Upon completion of the Academy, participants will share their individual projects at the Academy Party, a gathering of family, friends, community members, and fellow American Daughters. This event will be another opportunity to celebrate each participant’s accomplishments and make connections with people who care about their success and want to help them on their journey. Upon completion of the Academy, each participant may earn a small stipend or scholarship for completing all four weeks.
